Zoocompost of black lions for growing cucurbits

Jun, 21 2023

Difficult credit conditions force domestic farmers to save on organic and mineral fertilizers. Because of this, the risk of getting small crops or none at all increases.

Russian scientists took up the solution of this problem and found a completely acceptable solution from both economic and other points of view. Studies have shown that the cultivation of cucumbers with the introduction of zoocompost produced during the processing of flies of the species Hermetia Illucens (Black Soldier Fly) can significantly increase germination and yield. In addition, the specified soil additive fully meets the requirements of GOST 33830-2016.

The yield growth indicators are impressive – 1 bush on the composted plot gave an average of 35 fruits, while only 13-14 cucumbers were harvested from the control ones. From the experimental site, where the Black Lion’s zoocompost was introduced, almost 11 times more fruits were collected by weight (692.68 grams versus 63.75 grams).

Note that the testing was carried out not in a laboratory box, but in the field, so the result can be considered absolutely realistic and achievable in natural conditions over large areas. Experts advise to carry out the procedure in the spring, introducing fly zoocompost at the rate of 2 tons per hectare.

Experts from different countries suggest that such compost helps to increase the yield of other widely cultivated plants in Russia from the Pumpkin family, such as melon, watermelon, and pumpkin, at no extra cost.

Hermetia Illucens (Black Soldier Fly) in agriculture

The black soldier fly is becoming an increasingly important element in the success of an agricultural business. Zoocompost from it allows you to:

  • restore heavily polluted soil;
  • reduce the number of harmful insects;
  • actively fight against fungal diseases of the plant;
  • ensure sufficient concentration of biogenic ionized elements (Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2O3), humic substances, saprophytic microflora in the soil.

Both pasty or liquid, and dry free-flowing organic mass positively affects plants. But, it is better to dilute the zoocompost very carefully with water before applying it to the soil cover. This has a positive effect on germination rates. These data were obtained in the study of the influence of the Black Lion’s zoocompost on the growth of wheat.

By the way, zoocompost itself helps to increase the moisture capacity of the soil by 2 times.
